| Pyx |
 |
 |
The pyx, in gilded copper, rises up from a circular base embossed
with spiral decorations. A flattened knot with leaf motifs links the
base to the stem, followed by a second rounded and embossed knot in the
centre. The bombČ cup is completely smooth with a small apical cross
topping the swollen-shaped lid. The curved decoration on the base and
rounded embossed jointure recall 15th century designs, while the severe
and elegant cup dates from the last quarter of the 16th century, and
probably replaced an older cup, the original one, that was smaller in
size.
The chalice-shaped pyx was already in use in the 13th century, but
its conformation underwent a notable change due to the request for
moral renewal and restoration of the Catholic Church in the 16th
century. The bombČ of the cup therefore increased, as it needed to be
able to contain more, while the lid became progressively more swollen.
