Museum of San Francesco

Housed in the former convent of San Francesco, the museum contains an important collection of paintings, sculptures, religious furnishings and vestments, which testify to the historical significance and artistic vitality of the Greve in Chianti area.
One of the finest works in the collection can be seen in its original position in the oratory on the ground floor: the large polychrome terracotta of the Lamentation over the Dead Christ which, after its recent restoration has been attributed to the sphere of Baccio da Montelupo. The same room contains other works created for church environments, among them a 14th century Annunciation by an anonymous Florentine painter; an interesting painting on wood of the Madonna and Child enthroned between St. Anthony Abbot and St. Lucy carried out by an anonymous Florentine painter in the early decades of the 16th century; a Madonna and Child Bambino between St. Bartholomew and St. Francis by Francesco Granacci; and a 14th century bas-relief in marble of St. Francis. The room beside it, originally the sacristy, contains religious furnishings and vestments and two extremely precious objects: a Reliquary Cross in rock crystal, carried out between the 13th and 14th centuries, and a rare example of 16th century stained glass, a small window depicting Pope St. Silvester in Benediction, probably executed on a design by Francesco Granacci.

The first floor contains the section dedicated to painting, with canvases dating from the 17th to 19th centuries. These include in particular the Assumption of the Virgin, previously attributed to Jacopo Vignali and later to the style of Giovanni Montini, and the Assumption of the Virgin between St. Lucy and St. Anthony of Padua by Francesco Curradi. The gold and silverware section includes religious furnishings that date from the 16th, 17th, 18th and 19th centuries, among them a 16th century thurible and incense-boat and the 17th century Reliquary of St. Cassianus from the Badia di Montescalari. Two display cases in the corridor on the first floor contain the archaeological section of the museum, before being moved to their final destination in the Town Hall, and include examples of the many discoveries found in the district of Greve in Chianti. The former convent complex not only houses the museum but also a room for temporary exhibitions.
