The Museum of San Casciano

The museum, hosted in the Church of Santa Maria del Gesù and attached buildings, contains paintings, sculpture, religious furnishings and hangings that come from sites of religion in and around the town, and offer a priceless documentation on the local history and artistic traditions. The works of art that once decorated the rectangular interior of the church have been placed in their original positions, like the 14th century painting on wood of the Madonna and Child by Lippo Benivieni on the high altar. The altar on the right boasts a 17th century copy of the Pucci Altarpiece by Pontormo, while the one on the left is decorated with a Crucifixion from the same period. The Madonna and Childfrom the Church of San Vico l’Abate, carried out by Ambrogio Lorenzetti in 1319. Several other priceless works portray the same subject, among them a sculpture in polychrome marble attributed to Gino Micheli and dated 1341, and a large group of 14th century paintings on wood that include paintings by the Master of the Horne triptych, Cenni di Francesco, the Master of Sant’Jacopo in Mucciana, and Jacopo del Casentino. The collection of paintings is completed by other valuable works, including the St. Michael the Archangel and stories from legends about him on an altar frontal attributed to Coppo di Marcovaldo, the Coronation of the Virgin between Angels and Saints by Neri di Bicci, the 16th century painting of St. Rocchus, St. Sebastian and St. Anthony Abbot attributed to the Master of Tavarnelle, and a painted Cross thought to be by the Master of San Lucchese, cut out and shaped in the early 15th century.

Museum of Santa Maria sul Prato

This contains a fine collection of art works gathered over the course of time by the Compagnia della Misericordia and housed inside the church of Santa Maria sul Prato. The paintings worthy of note include three 14th-century panels by Ugolino di Nerio depicting the Madonna and Child, St. Peter and St. Francis, and the Crucifix by Simone Martini. On the right wall of the church there is a marble pulpit from the middle of the 14th century, an important work by Giovanni di Balduccio.
